When any dog is brought to me for grooming, it is essential that they are given a health evaluation including :

EYES:  They should look bright and happy. Check the skin around eyes, they should be clean with no redness.

NOSE:  Wet and cold.  It shouldn't be dry, crusty or blocked with discharge.

Especially for the flat faced breeds, check the deep fold of skin that lies above the nose, no redness or bad smell.

EARS:  Clean and smell free, no redness or flaky skin.

TEETH:  Depending on the dog's age, they should be clear of tartar. Breath also should not be too smelly and the gums should look healthy, not red or sore looking.

PAWS:  Check the nails - not too long or broken. Check the pads and between the pads for cuts or sore spots. With long haired breeds, sometimes bacteria can gather in the fur between the pads with wet mud, making the paw red and swollen. Check between the toes for any troubles by barley grass seeds etc.

BOTTOM:   Some dogs have problem with anal glands filling, express if necessary.

SKIN:   Look and feel over the dog's body for any lumps or abnormalities.

MOVEMENT: This is dependent upon the dog's age. Look carefully for any limp or unusual signs.

These points are essential and are checked every time your dog is groomed. If anything out of the ordinary is noticed, the owner will be informed.

I also suggest you to check these points once a week at home. It will helpful to know your dog's condition and you will find troubles earlier.
